Dig up a shovelful of earth and carefully sort it to find all the animals and plants and all the various sizes of pebbles and rocks and the remaining volume as far as possible of sand, organic matter, clay, and "dirt" Record the appearance of each and either or both estimate the volumne and carefully measure the weight. Photograph the piles or the flatten piles on gridded paper.
