Every time I give her a new idea or a project to finish, whenever I discuss a new corporate policy, she finds some gray area around it and then argues against it. If I say, “Okay then, what’s your idea?” she just gives me a ton of hazy answers. What is the best way to deal with someone like that? By the way, I don’t have the option of firing her at this time.
Thanks.

Thank her for her input and then tell her to do it your way. If she continues to sputter, tell her your mind is made up and you would like her to get to work on the project.

My impression is that she is doing this for the sake of being difficult, rather than wanting to really be helpful. If this is the case, then I would give her the routine day to day work that is more black and white. If she has a problem with that, I would be honest with her and tell her that she seems to have had difficulty completing to tasks.

The next time they come looking for the gray issues, send them to the "gray water dump" section of your local state park.

I would just tell her what needs to be done. If she can come up with a concrete answer have her write it down. Make copies for you and her ( bullet points) and make her stick to them.

She is creating problems because she thinks your decisions might adversely affect her and she doens't really trust your decisions . You need to be more understanding and assure her that she won't loose anything if she follows your viewpoint.
