All of them.
There are two kinds of kids that play college hockey.
1) The kid that wants to play professionally, but wants a good education.
2) The kid that knows what he wants to study and goes and gets it.
Kyle Turris and Kyle Okposo are examples of 1) They were great players who wanted a good education, but really want to be hockey players when they grow up.
A lot of players in group III are players that know exactly what academic program they want....and te school just happens to have an NCAA hockey team.
As an NHL scout, you work tournaments as far down the ladder as the Quebec International Peewee tournament to obscure professional tournaments in Europe.
You are always on the lookout for undiscovered talent..which in today's day and age is hard to find.
An example is a few days ago the poster talking about Zetterberg should get the Hart because he was drafted 210th. Well, the difference between the 10th pick and the 200th pick in a draft is very small. Teams can only have so many players, especially in the salary cap era. There are teams in the NHL that Zetterberg would not be a good fit (Rangers, Flyers,m and Ducks come to mind) and if he were on those teams, he may be a 30 point scorer (similar to his rookie year).
Some teams take the best player available
Some teams take the player that best fits them
Some teams do a combination of both
Every year 1,000+ people are draft eligible throughout the world. Only 500 get ranked, only 200+ get chosen, only 30% make the NHL, only a handful become stars.....and there is Martin St. Louis. The only person I can think of to win the scoring title while being undrafted (Wayne Gretzky was ranked 1st in his draft class (1980) but due to the WHA, was in the NHL before that)
Chris
- Any Canadian Junior player drafted between 1969 and 1992 by ANY team, I scouted. We all did. That's how it work.
Mikey,
- I was not involved in any European scouting. We didn't let Hasek get away. At the time we had a goaltender who had led the NHL in wins and GAA for 3 consecutive years and had won two Vezinas and taken us to a Stanley Cup final.....and was younger than Hasek. (and we had Jimmy Waite!) (Awaiting Bob's laughter)

Grinchmas- I don't think you give Hasek enough credit, it has only been in the last couple of years that I have really come around to facing it myself. His accomplishments are right up there among the best. I used to "LMAO" but I saw the light, maybe you should too. Also, I can't stand the man. When you start thinking SIX Vezinas, a couple of Hart trophies, gold medal, Stanley Cup etc..........he is in pretty elite company, certainly nothing to chuckle over.

Yeah LITY, did you have anything to do with scouting Hasek? Why did they let him get away??? He's the 3rd best goalie of all time IMO.

Mike: Hasek 3rd best all time? LMAO! In a pigs eye! He's behind Brodeur, Sawchuk, Plante and Roy at the very least. Lower still if we include ALL NHL goalies like Hainsworth and Mr Zero too.
