many meanings....
1. The speaker thinks you aren't alive but he/she is. The correct reply to such a person is: Mind your own business. (or) Get off your ego.
2. Somebody is selling Life magazines?
3. Somebody thinks they're cool by putting others down with this tritism. Smile and say "My, how original. Did you write that back in 1984 or did you learn that from your grandfather?" or "Why? Are you trying to sell yours?"

To me it means living away from parents, having a independant source of income and doing things that are expected of you.

The person who says it to another is telling them that what the are currently involved in is not of any real value. My friends will use the term when one of us is getting OCD about something trivial.
