Actually, how do we know that ANY film was intended to be a trilogy unless the studio/creator announces that intent? Generally, there is a sequel when the public likes the first one enough. If the second one also does well, there's a third~and more if necessary.

There are many pairs of films:
1) Gremlins and Gremlins: The Next Batch
2) Escape from New York and Escape from L.A.~~They're remaking the first one instead of filming a third one.
3) Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer
4) Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 1 & 2~Most people would say not having a trilogy is a wise choice.
5) To Die For and Son of Darkness: To Die for II
6) An American Werewolf... Only two cities have had a werewolf movie: London and Paris.
7) The Unnamable and The Unnamable II: The Statement of Randolph Carter
8) Strange Behavior and Strange Invaders~Michael Laughlin intended a "Strange" trilogy.
9) Tony Manaro films~~Saturday Night Fever and Staying Alive
10) Weekend at Bernie's 1 & 2
11) Speed and Speed 2: Cruise Control
12) Fright Night 1 & 2
13) The Sting 1 & 2
14) Dumb & Dumber and Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd
15) Dirty Dancing and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights
16) The Curse and The Curse 2: The Bite
17) Analyze This and Analyze That
18) Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can
19) Predator and Predator 2~~Officially, "AVP" isn't a sequel but a separate series, which now will have two films: "Alien vs. Predator" and "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem".
20) American Graffiti and More American Graffiti
21) The Last Picture Show and Texasville
22) Before Sunrise and Before Sunset
23) Butch & Sundance: The Early Days and Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid~~Unless someone wants to count "Mrs. Sundance" (TV movie) as a trilogy, there are only two films about this pair.
24) Cat People and Curse of the Cat People
25) True Grit and Rooster Cogburn~both about the Cogburn character

"The She Creature" has as its full title "Chronicles of the Mermaid 1: The She Creature". Plans fell through for the series.

I was going to list "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns", then I found this: "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008)! Yea! Rick O'Connell is coming back! Sadly, Maria Bello will be taking over the role of Evie although John Hannah will be back as Evie's rascally brother.

Oh! I was going to list "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai", which shows the never-filmed sequel's title at the end of the film. The studio really wanted to make a sequel and were disappointed by the failure of the film. I know this because a studio representative attended a sci fi convention the year they were going to release "Aliens", "The Fly" and "Big Trouble in Little China". He was head of the official Buckaroo Banzai fan club, of which I was a member, and he visited with me for quite a while after his presentation. I told him that everyone had thought I was Silver Fox due to my very noticeable Banzai Institute ID badge; they were certain I was the person from 20th Century Fox. *giggle* So, I was either famous or infamous, I'm not sure which.

gee you must not read movie news much

Toy Story 3 comes out this summer i think

Buzz Lightyear toys have been recalled in Australia and the other toys must save him.

Also Kill Bill 3 and 4 are in the works.

Oh and a Gremlins 3 is in the works (at least planning) where its set as a prequel, this time in china.

Yes! There's one which immediately came to my mind : "Chinatown", "The Two Jakes" and there was suppose to be a third movie called "Gittes v. Gittes", but with a troubled sequel (The Two Jakes), the production was cancelled.

There is a rumor that it will be made some time now, so I don't know this is going to be valid until when...

Kill Bill was technically meant to only be one movie, so, I don't think it counts.

Oh, I remember hearing that "Ghostbusters 3" was slated to be made but went through movie hell. The final blow was Chris Farley's death, since he was due to have a role in the movie.
