Congress OKs Va Tech-inspired gun bill, Dec. 19, 2007
WASHINGTON - Congress on Wednesday passed a long-stalled bill inspired by the Virginia Tech shootings that would more easily flag prospective gun buyers who have documented mental health problems. The measure also would help states with the cost.
"Rather than focusing on improving the current laws prohibiting people with certain mental health disabilities from buying guns, the bill is now nothing more than a gun lobby wish list," said Kristen Rand, legislative director of the Violence Policy Center. "It will waste millions of taxpayer dollars restoring the gun privileges of persons previously determined to present a danger to themselves or others."
The original bill would require any agency, such as the Veterans Administration or the Defense Department, to notify a person flagged as mentally ill and disqualified from buying or possessing a gun...

Will the votes on this bill affect who you vote for in the Presidential election? Is this just a taste of what's in store for us if we elect the wrong person?

I imagine depression would count as mentally unstable. How many Americans are affected by depression? A lot. So once an individual submits as being a depressive and wants medication, then he/she can't buy a gun. Once the individual has finally beats depression and gets off the medication, I imagine it will be near impossible to be allowed to buy a gun again since the individual is suceptible to becoming depressed again.
I imagine being marked down as mentally unstable would result in confiscation of the mentally unstable individual's current registered guns.
What is considered mentally unstable or mentally stable?
Hitler played this game and used it against dissent. Not cool.

I'm equally concerned on this.
It begs to question, what is going to constitute a mental illness as far as this law goes? Was someone depressed for a short while over a tragic event and needed medication? Will this person be able to own a firearm?
Speaking from what I've observed in people that I know, victims of rape and molestation leads to mental illness. Are you going to take away their potential trump card of safety to prevent a future tragedy?
Without seeing what exactly this bill considers to be a mental illness, it's hard to say. It can be broad enough to disarm a lot of harmless, law abiding citizens.
Edit:
I found the actual details of the bill (was a pain to find it, as I didn't see any bill refference numbers in ANY news report on it)

I believe this is it. Though it says June 11th on the date, that was around the time it was introduced and postponed.

Nope not at all. A properly regulated protection stress, being mandatory to the risk-free practices of a unfastened State, the excellent of the human beings to maintain and undergo hands, shall no longer be infringed. My expertise isl that all human beings can very own a weapon. purchase possessing that weapon I/they are starting to be to be a factor of the country's protection by potential of default if attacked. It does no longer imply that i'm/they seem to be a factor of the status military. The founders knew what a status military is, they only fought one. however the protection stress (everyone possessing a firearm) ought to be requested to shelter the country if attacked. i be attentive to of no person that isn't use their privately very own firearms to in basic terms that so they doing precisely what they 2d modification enable the firearms for.

Before you get concerned with this you should know that they are proposing to disarm Americans citizens altogether, thinking it will make people safer. Drugs are illegal but does that keep them off the street? If guns are banned I will just go down to XXXXX's (better not say his name) around the corner, as much as I loathe that fkkker I know he can hook me up with ANYTHING I want short of a tactical nuke. Mostly he's into glass and even worse I probably don't even want to know about.

I'm all for people being able to purchase guns. But do I honestly want people deemed mentally ill getting them? No more than I want felons getting them.

If you knew some of the crazies that I do, you would be thankful for this bill.
I know people who own guns, and keep them well cleaned, loaded and right at their front and back door. One of them doesn't even know who he is from day to day.
He's got his home gated with wooden gates, and broken down cars sitting in his drive so you can't drive into it, it looks like some kind of Waco compound.

The guy at virginia tech wasn't supposed to have a gun anyway. They should instead eliminate all gun-free zones, which are actually shooting spree friendly zones.
