LOL! I assume you refer to a Jerusalem Cricket, (Stenopelmatus fuscus), http://www.flickr.com/photos/crow/439207770/
No, they are harmless. A big one (an inch or more long) can bite, but it's only a pinch with the mandibles. It rarely even draws a tiny droplet of blood.
There is a common belief that Jerusalem crickets have a deadly sting. They have no sting at all.
This was one of my favorite bugs as a child, and still is. I have handled (and been bitten by) a lot of them.
They live underground and create burrows. They are omnivorous: they eat roots, bugs, decomposing plant matter, and other organic matter. They can damage plants by eating the roots, but they also benefit the garden by eating garden pests, and anyway they are not so numerous as to have much effect on the garden or farm.
They are also called earth babies or "hijas de la tierra" in Spanish; I have seen one emerging from the ground, and I can see where they got this nickname. It looks like it is being born from the earth.

I suppose if I was walking and I saw one and I didnt want to step on it, and while I was tring to avoid it, I fell and hit my head just so, and died, then yes, maybe a potato bug could kill me.
