We think it intuitive, since we have 10 fingers (or more properly, 8 fingers and 2 thumbs), but other systems have been used in history. The Babylonians had a base 60 system, and we still use parts of it today. Wonder why there are 60 minutes to an hour and 60 seconds to a minute? The 360 degrees in a circle is adaptation of their calendar. But anyway.

Decimal systems go back to thousands of years BC, although the concept of zero was fuzzy and didn't get written down until 400 AD or so.
