I find most commercial salad dressings to be unacceptable. They either have too much salt, too much sugar, or not enough flavor. Instead I make my own vinagrette and it's remarkably easy. I keep a jar in the fridge at all times. Here's the recipe:
1/4 C. balsamic vinegar
3/4 C. extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp. dijon mustard
1 tbsp. honey
as much pepper as you can stand - I use fresh cracked black pepper and give it between 4-8 turns
Mix all of these together in your jar. Firmly attach the lid and shake like crazy. It's perfection with fresh greens, lots of vegetables (I favor tomatoes, pepper strips, snow peas or squash), marinated artichokes, feta cheese, dried cranberries, and toasted walnuts.

If I had to choose-"ranch", (I friend forced me to try ranch dressing with some cheesesticks-it's ok, but I'm not a salad person, but my mom made me eat plain lettuce as a kid, vinegar related foods aren't my kind of food.

I prefer some fresh ground pepper & shredded cheese - no dressing is fabulous! Really lets the flavor of the vegetables come out.
