Mine just died. It was a 300gb one. I was thinking about replacing it because I needed more space anyway. Because this happened, I'm now thinking instead of getting one of those 1tb ones, I should buy two 500gb ones.

What do you think? And also: Where should I be looking to find a good deal on these?(used or otherwise)

Personally, I prefer the LaCie brand of hard drives. I have 4 of them (various makes/models/sizes) and they haven't really let me down. They typically offer a variety of connection methods (USB, FireWire, eSATA) and many of them are stackable, which may help save some space. Lacie Drives typically come with a program called "SilverKeeper" which is a great bootable backup utility for Macs. (I don't know if this software can be used on Windows or not).

Because everyone's needs differ, make sure you get a drive that has the right connectivity options as well as the right drive speed you need. (Some video editing apps require 7200 rpm drives). For example, I prefer drives with FireWire, mainly because of the daisy-chaining capabilities.

It all depends on what your needs are; Whether it be faster disk access, great backup utilities, loads of connectivity options, or simply adding extra storage.

You are thinking correctly, unless you need tons of space then 2 500G drives will be fine, use one to install your operating system and software that you use all the time. Use the second drive for games, photo and video storage, also use it for a backup storage drive.

Personally I use a company called Tiger Direct at http://www.tigerdirect.com. They have excellent prices, quick shipping, you can use Paypal (if you have an account) and I haven't had a single problem with anything purchased from them.

Go for one of the big name manufacturers; Seagate, Maxtor or Western Digital. What size are you looking for? 3.5" drives require a separate mains power source, whereas 2.5" will draw power from the PC. Also make sure you get a drive with the right interface for your PC: USB, Firewire or both.
