the larger one was following the smaller one around the tank. The smaller one shakes its hands at the large one. What are they doing? Should I seperate them?

This is only just a sign of aggression. I have 2 baby red-eared sliders and they would do this to each other from time to time. It's fine.

It's just like us humans. We get stressed out with each other sometimes. That's normal. We can't always get along. But that doesn't mean we should be separated forever because of it.

If they are CONSTANTLY doing this, you SHOULD probably separate them. But if this is just something they do every now and then, it's normal. Don't worry about it.

To show you how normal this is, here's one of the many many many videos from YouTube:

A lot of people mistaken this for a "mating ritual". It's not true though. BABIES do this "dance." It's just a sign of aggression, which again, is normal and nothing to worry about.

That's an excellent website. It will tell you what you need to know. Take a look at the toenails on the "tickler" (typically the male). They should be much longer than the other one if it is a female. I've never heard of stress doing this - but it's definitely a courtship display. Even young turtles (daughter had seen hers doing this at 6 months) can do this.

I had exactly the problem with 2 RES. the smaller didn't eat because she was stressed. and when I seperated them (I took the smaller at home and the other is in my office) then she (the smaller) started to ead and feel safe. she is fine now. and also the other one.

It is using a courtship ritual- which is a sign of stress in young turtles. It may mean the the turtles are crowded, the water is not what they want, etc.
