There was close coordination between Kim Il Sung and Stalin. Moscow gave Kim the green light to invade the South, and provided the arms to do it with.

The Red Air Force provided pilots who flew the latest Soviet aircraft in North Korean markings against the Americans.

North Korea still follows the Stalinist example even today.

I find that very hard to believe that, given the fact that china is in between Russia and North Korea, I think I read somewhere that in WWII they did help in battling the Japanese. If anything the reading a quick read about the Korean war on Wiki I get the impression that Soivet forces there in North Korea but to stop any threat from the USA forces in South Korea and that North Korea was pressing to attack the south with Russian help.

With this I get the impression that they were more of an ally than a controlling force.

to drutazo- The USSR has a direct border crossing with North Korea- and a major railway line too.

The USSR did not "control" North Korea, it simply supported it and bankrolled it. All the army equipment was Russian made and came either directly (early in the war) or via red China (late in the war).
At that time the USSR and Mao were allies and the reason that the USSR was absent from the UN was to protest that Taiwan was (at that time) recognised as the legal representative of China
One of the major reasons for Chinese involvement was to force the "west" to deal directly with Mao's government.

evidence for SOviet involvement? every bullet, tank and plane used by north korean troops was made in USSR. Most of the fighter pilots were also "volunteers" from the USSR (they were restricted to fly only over the CHina/USSR/N.Korea areas)

Check out the new David Halberstam book, The Coldest Winter.

Kim Il Sung was a major in the Soviet army. Russian advisors revised the ignorant invasion plan he had devised.

The control was loose -- Kim was a puppet who liked to pull his own strings. That's why the Russians were absent from the UN when its Security Council resolved to send UN forces to defend South Korea. They were surprised at the timing.

Btw, I'm not one of these red-baiting guys who've been accusing the Democrats of treason for 70 years. Some of them will show up here, I expect. I wish they'd serve their warrant, if they've got it, or otherwise learn the manners their mamas obviously never taught them.

They didn't control it directly. The USSR communists controlled the Chinese communists and the chinese communists backed the North Korean communists.
