I bough an external hard drive - but it is still asking me to inasert a diskette.Problem is my floppy is not working

What software are you using? Did you correctly partition and format the external hard drive? What OS are you using?

As long as your external hard drive is recognized by Windows and shows up as, for example Drive E:, then you should be able to back up your PC to it. At the minimum, you can drag an folder you want to back up to Drive E:. It depends on the program you use.

When I use the built-in Windows XP Pro Accessories>System Tools>Backup, it let me Browse to any drive, any folder to store the backup.

Maybe your PC needs software to use external hard drive.

You may be able to down load it from the internet. Or you can buy an external floppy.

Then you can backup or copy files to your external drive.
