Seems like there are a few gals here where they're a few snags short of a barbie, and you gals know who you are.
I don't care if you're good at maths, it's a bloody joke paying out on men. You might be smart at school but you're sure as heck not smart in life.

Why are you looking for an "evolutionary reason" for something that is not true? Read up on how girls are educated in those two areas, and why they have difficulty in classes where boys are assumed to be better. Look at the social pressure on girls to do badly in these subjects so they aren't called nerds and worse. The number of female mathematicians and scientists is increasing rapidly because educators have at long last realized that females' alleged deficiencies in these areas are a myth. It's time for the rest of society to catch up -- if we don't we will miss some great scientific minds.

Don't listen to this nonsense about testosterone and spatial ability. Who indeed runs the universities? Mostly elitist men who want to keep the social order dominated by males. They want to keep math as an old boys club pursuit . The truth is, what we are told is science/ evolutionary psychology, is actually junk pop psychology. One of my best female friends is majoring in Applied Mathematics. Math has always come naturally to her. She also aces all the spatial tests. She is not good with foreign language, which these studies say women are supposed to be good at.

American women have the lowest rate of math skills, as do most western women, because of bias. Asian and Middle Eastern women ( those from these countries) are way ahead of western women.

There have been outstanding women mathematicians throughout history. Look up WOMEN IN MATH and you will find many. But don't buy into these notions of women having less spatial ability, it's BUNK.

Many women are extremely competent in the mathematics area.
There is a frightening trend, however. This has nothing to do with sexism. Girls are showing less interest in math when they enter middle school because they don't want to be branded as a nerd. A lot of bad things happen at that age when many girls get wrapped up in social appearances.
It has nothing to do with capabilities, but more with opportunities and how they were taken.

The joke is good, but the question is false.

There are lots of women mathematicians, At school I had more women maths teachers than male. My first real girlfriend was a mathematician and told me that her economics lectures were dominated by women. The team responsible for breaking the Enigma code in WWII had equal numbers of male and female mathematicians (though not always equally valued).

I see the joke, but just wanted to set the record straight.

I agree with Amy_TwoTwo. You are being sexist. Isn't this suppose to be answering questions? Not making jokes or pointing out that women, even if you are a female too, sucks at math? That is not true. I never had a math teacher that was a male before. Even if that does not mean anything. There are many great women out there that can beat men anytime in math. Also, I am really good in math too. Been getting straight A's.

I myself am no great shakes at it; yet upon occasion I rise to the challenge, so I went out and bought myself a bunch of Math books and when I feel in the mood to feed my brain some more brain cells I tackle it. It's not to strengthen that weakness it's to gain me more brain cells. I even got an algebra CD to learn a bit about algebra or to see how they fandangle those problems. Plus I adore Professor Doodles, he's the guy that teaches it. It's not so boring when you see a cartoon professor sticking his tongue out at the side of his mouth when he concentrates. Do I remember how to do it? Nope.
Anyways; I like to be a happy math weak person cause that's the way it is for me.

Very amusing. But, to answer your question, studies have found positive correlations between testosterone levels in normal males and measures of spatial ability. A more sociological expanation could be, that men may have evolved greater spatial abilities, possibly as a result of certain behaviors, such as navigating during a hunt, that they were more likely to be involved in during humans' evolutionary history.

Women are not bad at mathematics. It is matter of fact an opinion. There are people that have trouble with mathematics, but it is not only women. Men can be bad at mathematics too. What are you trying to say? You're bad at it because you're a girl which makes you think women are bad at mathematics too?

"Ummmmm, it's a joke?
Sorry I forget that women aren't funny at all :P"

What are you trying to say this time? That women don't get jokes? Women are not funny? Or you just made a joke and its not funny? You're being sexist.
