To all IT students,

Do you like to study in an IT institute that uses freeware for its teaching purposes? It does not license propriety software and it uses only freeware and it makes its students use the freeware for their assignments.

For example, the school will not use Windows in its system but only Linux or will not use IE but Mozilla or it will not use MS Word but Openoffice.

Would you like to study under such conditions?

This makes it very difficult to learn how "real world" systems work. I would not attend such an institution.

It sounds like a great idea to me. Many companies run Linux on their servers, and Mozilla Firefox is growing more and more popular. However, it would be to one's benefit to be able to work with a wide variety of software solutions.

That is way over; the original ideal of those software is alternatives, not replacements, this sounds Stalin-like dictatorialships which is not what it should be so I wouldn't go there.

Why not? C is C, Java is Java, Perl is Perl. Now if you want to get M$ certified, that is another issue.

I guess it depends on what the institute is proposing to teach you.
