i clean my aquarium regularly ,water changes weekly filter change every three weeks (more then what they even say to change them) but i still have issues with algae growing on everything and its getting worse and worse. i do not have to much light either, the tank gets about 8 hours of light per day, the light is on a timer. it is a fixture with two t5 light bulbs. seems worse since i got them but it was a problem even with the standard tube lights i had originally.

WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE ALGAE!

I had the same exact problem
i got myself a T5 light and suddenly brown algae started growing like crazy

What i did, was getting plants and a
Bristlenose pleco (but only if you have at least a 30 gallon tank)

Since you have the T5, it's to strong just for regular lighting, but perfect for plants
Try anubis, onion plant and amazon sword
they helped to cut back my algae in just one week, now i hardly have any :)

Hope that helps
good luck

Is your aquarium near a window and receiving either a lot of direct or indirect light? What you are describing sounds like algae bloom and it is a little much for a plex or otocinclus (sp?) to keep up with. You might want to reposition your aquarium and then kick your bottom filter to the curb. They are a pain in the butt when it comes to managing the biological filtration of an aquarium. I also recommend cutting back on the water changes (monthly even!) and just adding when needed. Just change your back filters when they look like they need to be changed. A lot of times they can be rinsed cleaned and that can save you a boat load of moola. I have successfully raised and cared for fish for over 30 years so it's not like I am talking out of my rear. Discus, Cichlids (South American and African), Rainbow Trout (with a chiller) and Chinook Salmon in a 500 gallon aquarium, community aquariums and terrariums ALL WITHOUT UNDERGRAVEL FILTERS and NO ALGAE ISSUES. Try it, you will be shocked. unlike your tank.

you can try a few otocinclus algae eaters or get an ultraviolet sterilizer as it will kill any algae as it filters through. its a great low effort method of getting rid of algae.

^yeah. get a few "algae suckers" as we call them. They just eat up all the algae in your tank. Plecostomus' are really cool and they can get very big, depending on the size of your tank.
