The Earth has an elliptical orbit and ranges from about 91.4 million to 94.5 million miles (147.2 million to 152.2 million km.) from the Sun. It's actually closest to the Sun in January.

I usually say about a hundred million miles. It actually varies. We are about a million miles closer in December than in June.

The distance was unknown for a long time, and it was partly for the resolution of this question that explorers travelled the world to observe eclipses. One of them was Captain James Cook who was traditionally the first European to discover the land I still call home.
