Bernice Gera was the first woman umpire in professional baseball. Her first (and only) game was in June of 1972 in the New York-Pennsylvania Class A League.

She resigned between games of a doubleheader, due to poor treatment by players and fans.

MLB has a huge problem with umping and they admit it. There isn't very high turnover. Not that they want guys coming and going every year, but a lot of guys get up there and stay for 10-30 years. So it is hard to advance anyone. Personally I think there are some umps they should fire because they are consistently terrible, but because there is low turnover it makes it hard for any man, let alone, woman to advance.

Yes, but not in the MLB i don't think. I would have no problem with a woman being an umpire as long as the game stayed fair. After all there is no rule that says that a woman can't. Equal rights.

My GF refs inhouse soccer and indoor soccer games.

No, but I dig it at my sports bar when the hot chicks who serve me beer and wings dress up in their little umpire shirts and shorts.
