Why did they want to be part of the US when they could be their own country?

They were just across a river from a hostile power. They could not raise enough forces of their own to keep their borders secure and they recognized the economic advantage as well as the military advantage of being part of the US.

Because they didn't like Santa Anna's(leader of Mexico's) laws. Slavery was prohibited and it was required that you had to convert to Catholicism.

They became an independant nation first and stayed that way for 8 yrs. I don't suppose they did it with the intention of being annexed to the U.S. but desired it after, probably because they were vunerable, being in between Mexico and the U.S.

Most settlers in Texas were at one point US citizens, having been born in the US. There was probably also a feeling that without US support then Mexico would invade again.

They borrowed money and manpower to fight the Mexicans and owed the US. I don't believe they wanted to be annexed, but had no choice.
