It's only good if your senator is doing the earmarking

They benefit the politicians who include them in these massive bills. It allows a politician to go back to his district and brag about all the good he doing for them.
These projects could never pass on their own merits so this is how they get the funding.
Basically, it's buying votes with tax dollars. They all do it and it's reprehensible.

Politicians get money for their districts for projects on one in their right mind would agree to . for example, a Woodstock Museum, the bridge to Nowhere in Alaska. Then the politicians go back home and say "See what I brought for you."
