Approx 7,000 Americans and 20,000 Japs...Impressive body count by the Japs considering they were only around 20,200 defending the island as compared to the invading American force of more than 100,000. I wonder if this may have prompted Truman to use the bomb than risk more lives invading Japan.

to manoj : there is NO DOUBT that the fanatical resistance at Iwo, and the kamikaze attacks at Okinawa convinced Truman and everyone in the know to drop the A-bombs.
