Why do you want to adopt an animal if you can't even afford
to take care of it?
One note of advice you should be able to afford an animal, not just buying it, but also all of its care, emergency care, etc.

A fish or mouse or hamster or gerbil, etc., but you still have to buy food, a cage, vet bills. If you can't afford to pay a foster group or shelter group the $100.00 or so, then how can you afford the vet bills, spaying or neutering, food, toys, etc. A pet really is an expensive addition to you and your family or family of friends and should not be gotten without great consideration. My pets are my family just as much as my children and, boy oh boy, are they expensive! However, you can adopt an animal in name and spirit through a group such as HalRescue.org out of Petsmart in Bridgewater and they always need money desperately. Beside helping needy owners with spay and neuters, they catch ferile cats and spay and neuter them, let them back in the wild if that is where they are happiest or foster kittens in homes until they are used to humans and can be given to forever homes. Good luck and give it some thought!

If you mean you want to adopt it symbolically, as in give a donation to an organization in someone's name, I think any organization would be glad to have your help in any way.
A donation in my honor was one of the best gifts I got for Christmas the other year. But be sure your friends really like animals or the cause, otherwise, they might really rather have a $10 starbucks card.
Try your local zoo, they might have a small bird or lizard that you can adopt for about that price, or at least, you can buy a week or a month of upkeep for it.
My apologies in advance if this is not what you meant.

You should never adopt any animal for friends. What if they don't want it, or cant take care of it. What happens then? Horrible idea, if somebody wants an pet they can go get it themselves. There is a REASON nobody adopts out an animal for $10

If you can't afford to adopt the animal, how can you afford to take care of the animal? Food, shots, toys, vet care...
The animal itself is rarely the expensive part.
