When I was 17 years old I carried the highest average in the state of California for anyone. 239 for 19 weeks. Then I joined the adult leagues where they would slip me drinks when no one was looking and my game suffered. I did take sweepstakes night with a 287, 265, 286 scratch.

Only thing that escaped me was a 300.

That is impressive. I didn't start bowling until I was 20. My highest average in California was 173. High series was 630. High game 257, Orange County Association. My mother started bowling at age 40 and within 2 years was carrying a 180 plus average in all her leagues in the Los Angeles Association. She bowled two 700 series and a 299 game. I averaged 165 in my senior leagues here in Washington for several years. Just getting back into the swing after rotator cuff problems. It would be interesting to know what association you belonged to in Calif. They have the best leagues and tournaments in that state.

My highest score at age nine was 230 something (forgotten now)! Got a trophy at the end of Youth League. Never hit that score scratch again in my life. I bowled in leagues until 1997. I was consistant in scores of 160's as an adult. I used a fingertip grip. Never took it all that serious. Just for fun!
Edit:
Nope don't bowl since there is no Bowling Alley here.
Oh, with my big handicap the 230 was like in the high 200's. Too long ago to remember! Yikes! â¥

Never entered a bowling alley in my life until about 6 months after my second child was born. My girlfriend (who lived next door with her husband) and I had an opportunity to take free bowling lessons on Monday afternoons. We'd bundle up all the kids and off we'd go. When the lessons were over - after several weeks - we all formed a league of Monday afternoon bowlers.
We eventually joined the evening leagues and ended up bowling 2 nights a week and Monday afternoons.
My highest average was 180...which I pretty much maintained for a number of years. My highest game was in the low 200's...don't recall the score.
I played for years, until arthritis started affecting the knuckles in my right hand..After bowling, they'd swell and hurt like he11...So I quit.

I never bowled until I got married. We joined a league and got last place 3 years straight. Got a trophy the last year, a crying towel the 2nd, and the first year nothing. We were so proud of our last place trophy's too. Everyone loved playing against us. My highest game was a 196 and I had a little too much to drink. My lowest was a 44. LOL

Since my teen years my whole family has bowled together . My highest score was 210 when I was 8 months pregnant. The men in the family felt put out to be beaten by a pregnant woman. Interestingly enough, most of my sisters also bowled their best when pregnant. Maybe it has something to do with one's center of gravity being altered.
My dad said I cheated that I had 2 bowling balls, one in my stomach-lol.
I started out with a wicked curve ball, it'd head for the gutter and curve into a strike every time it was just hard for me as a lefty to straighten that curve out. But I have it corrected now.
My consistent average though is only 145 and yes I stll bowl and am having fun teaching my 10 year to love bowling now as well. She has her mom's wicked curve ball though-lol.

When I was a kid, our boys club was required to have one activity for girls if they wanted gov't funding. They picked bowling. The boy's club had 2 lanes & no pin setters, so two boys would set up our pins. For those of you who don't remember pin boys, after the first ball was thrown, they would clear all of the fallen pins off of the lane. After the second ball, little "nails" would come up from under the floor & the pin boys would set the pins on them, & then the "nails" would retract. The boys also had to send our balls back. Our instructor's name was Cy. My mother drove us to our games against other girl's teams in neighboring towns.
Wow! Did you bring back memories!
When I was in the post office, a lot of my co-workers were in a league, so I bowled with them for a while, but I didn't take it seriously. It was my one night out & I wanted to have a few beers & have a good time. I broke 200 a few times. My best average was around 165.
