How many of you who are not considered pretty or good looking by today's standards have noticed that pretty people have it easier than the rest of humanity not blessed with a pleasant face or body?

How many of you know Tyra Banks? Tyra did a show where she dressed up as a fat woman. Tyra wanted to know what it felt like to live as a fat woman in America. So, Tyra went out into society searching for employment, searching for friends at a local NYC bar, just living an ordinary life.

Guess what?

People treated Tyra (not knowing it was the beautiful model) like dirt. Men rejected Tyra (dressed up as a fat woman); they did not want to be seen talking with her in public. How simplistic we as human beings can be.

How many of you can relate to this Tyra Banks experience?

I say looks will only get you so far. There is a lot of prejudice about weight and looks and as I age I find prejudice against my age. Pretty people do get by easier and get more breaks and that's just the way it is. But there is nothing worse that a real pretty person that tries to survive on their looks. They open their mouths and geez, you gotta laugh. I'd rather be smart that pretty but the truth is I prefer to be both.

Well, Hannah, society and the world is all an illusion. People see the world as they wish and are driven by pressure, from this pressure comes the want and 'need' of people to be excepted in society. However, there is still a large part of society that still takes character/personality over looks, but men and women are always looking for the best. This is where you could put even social Darwinism and natural selection into play, people want what they think is best. Aside from all that, coming back to life as an illusion can be a simple saying, however color can change opinions almost instantaneously, take for an example Megan Fox, a lovely lady if I don't say so my self ( I'm a man). If you were to send her into a large populated area, like LA and she were to walk around in a white dress, and then a red later, she would get a whole lot more glances in the red. You see, the brain uses color in some odd ways, in this instance red stands for a sort of sex appeal or attractiveness. If you were to put red on male boxer( gloves, shirt, shorts, etc.) he may look more menacing because the color red also acts as an aggressive stance. Hope this helped Hannah. Just understand that people want to be excepted, while there is also an entirely different look at it from many many different views.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Fat does not equal ugly. It was an experiment that they were able to edit for effect. There may have been men or people who did talk to her but she edited it out for effect. Tyra is an attractive lady but she is not what I would consider beautiful. Just because society says the beautiful Tyra Banks doesn't mean that she is beautiful to everyone. With that said there are some beautiful people with ugly ways and that makes them ugly.

I can totally relate to Tyra Bank's experience. I am a server and when I am working, I don't really care what I look like so I usually pull my hair back in a ponytail and I don't wear much makeup. One day, a group of guys came in and although they were seated in my section, they asked to have this pretty, petite blond waitress serve them instead. I guess I wasn't hot enough for them because I am a curvy, brunette who doesn't have a fake tan. Also when I go to my work to meet friends, my coworkers are like wow you look soooo good! They don't understand that I don't care about what I look like in certain circumstances and other times, I do.

I can certainly relate. While there are things we can do about our looks (primarily controlling our weight - which goes way beyond mere appearance), there are so many other things that are more important.

Our personality, our work habits, our ethics, our sense of humor, our ability relate to others -- these things are more important than looks any day.

Other things we can do about our looks are: orthodontia, personal hygiene (a clean body and mouth are important), good posture, good physical condition, and wearing the right clothing for our age and build.

When I was young, I was considered beautiful, and everything came easily. When I got older, I put on weight and everything was difficult. That's quite a smack-down considering that most Americans are overweight. Even fat men shun getting involved with fat women.

Human evolution has not caught up with modern "progress". We are, in essence, an ancient species in a modern world. We evolved to find mates based on particular criteria, and the modern world doesnt change that.

Very true. It's too bad we can't just look at each other the way dogs do. My dogs get excited about seeing anyone no matter what they look like. They just enjoy the interaction with people! I guess dogs are smarter than humans.

I think this goes back to our basic animal instincts... survival of the fittest right? No one wants to be around someone who is morbidly obese because if they can't take care of themselves, how are they going to take care of others. It's almost like people are embarressed for them. I don't have a problem with people who are unattractive, but I'm not a shallow person. I don't know... that's just my thought.

EDIT: Yes let's blame everyone else for being fat. That is ridiculous. Skinny people look better than fat people, that's just the way it is. I agree that now it is cool to weigh 100 lbs. when before woman had curves. I don't think that people who are teeny tiny look good, but I don't think that people who are huge look good either. Just take care of yourselves and be healthy. That is attractive.
