She was on every drug she could get her hands on, she smoked and she drank during the entire pregnancy. Now that the baby is in prenatal intensive care, everyone is wondering why she came out early. Her and the father are so worried. It makes me sick. How could anyone do that to their baby? I guess my question is, what are the baby's chances to live amidst the horrible circumstances?

Neonatal units do amazing things to help these premies survive. That is not the problem!
The problem is when this child goes home and what that child will go home to. That is it's greatest challenge in life!
Be a good cousin and keep your eyes on that baby, Don't let it be abused!

""" My cousin just had her baby nine weeks early.?
She was on every drug she could get her hands on, she smoked and she drank during the entire pregnancy. """
I am sorry but do you see anything wrong with that?.
When they say not to drink or smoke during pregnancy, they don't say it just for the sake of it.
There could be several things that could have played lead factor to this premature pregnancy. Does she have medical illness history, anything serious that runs in family ? What about the father? You also have posted little to no information about baby's current health. Weight , height, any problems with new born at all etc?.
I really doubt that anyone could figure out on internet without running diagnostics and knowing history of both parents. I best recommend you to post same thread with little more information at webmd dot com, you might get a little more accuracy there than here. Not that i doubt yahoo'ers but just a thought.
Best wishes to your cousin and her baby.

I would say that the chances are not to bad but you don't know what all the baby is going through because of what the mom did during the pregnancy...but they say after 6 mo. the odds get better and better I know a girl who had her boy at just 5 mo. he had a lot of problems but he is a helthy 9 year old now!

Sounds like the "heads" got an early Christmas present. The chances of the child living are high since It will receive all of the free medical care that it needs. On the other hand it's chances of developing, mentally and physically not to mention spiritually, will no doubt be hampered if not stifled by the parents free spirited (to put it nicely) lifestyle.

if the baby is generally healthy and has a good weight despite the smoking, drinking and drug abuse by the mother I would think it would have good chances of survival but will be in the intensive care unit for a while

I don't know what the chances are, but I agree. They're so worried now, but weren't before, huh? I babysat a kid once who I had no idea how to control. When the mother came home she actually said "well I did a lot of drugs while I was pregnant." Yikes.

The baby might live, but in what condition? Child Protection Services needs to get involved. If they didn't take care of her when she was a fetus, how will they take care of her now? And in what environment? It is very likely that she will have special needs-will these parents be able and willing to provide the services she may need?

Well, babies are able to survive that premature. They probably have at least 1 drug addiction which they will have to break as a baby. As for it's chances of survival, it depends. The baby is at an increased chance for brain damage, etc.
I hope it all turns out well.

If the hospital staff is aware of her drug problem and using while preg, they usually will put baby in foster home until mom can prove she can be a good mother.

If she used drugs, close to the delivery the baby should have had the same drug it it's system. If that happened the hospital would be required to notify social services.
