Mechanical Engineering is a good field to look at. Mechanical engineers tend to fit into a lot of design, quality, & manufacturing positions*. It's a versital degree and you have a lot of choice as to what area you might locate in after graduating.

Keep in mind that the first 1-2 years of (BS Engineering Degree) college are mostly basic courses that apply to any engineering field, so you have some time to get your feet wet and switch fields if you want.

You mention microwaves and remote controls; the design of these has a lot of electrical engineeering in them. But most electronics manufacturing is in Asia, China in particular. If you go this route, you might want to minor in Chinese.
