Well, it all depends on how far away the star is.

The closest star to Earth is the sun. It takes about 8 minutes for its light to reach Earth.

For other stars it might take many many light years.

Look up different star systems. You should be able to find information on their distances.

Light as always is moving at 299,792,458 metres per second.

The speed of light is constant for all observers. So light from all stars reaches you (and me) at exactly the same speed (186,282.397 miles per second). The TIME it takes for the starlight to reach us depends on how far away the star is. For the Sun it takes about 8 minutes to get from the surface of the Sun to the Earth.

As stated our star the sun 8 mins next closest 4.5 years some further away stars the light can take eons in fact we may be able to see some stars now that have already faded or novaed locally but as the light takes a great deal of time to reach us what we do see may now no longer exist. Mind bending a bit but looking up at stars if actually looking back into time. Conversely the light and radio waves (same thing) are radiated into space at the same speed too.

The speed of light is approximately 186,000 miles per second. That means that for each second after the starlight is emitted the light has travelled 186,000 miles. If you know how far away the star is then the time it takes can be calculated. The distance light travels in one year (ie 186,000miles/sec X365 days /yearX24 hr/dayX3600seconds / hr= 5.8x10^12 miles/ year or 1AU (1 Light year)

Distance (miles ) = 186,000 miles/second X Time(sec)
