I know nothing about wireless internet so my question may not be very clear. I have a desktop and a laptop and I have an ATT modem. I'm trying to add wireless internet to my laptop but keep the desktop hooked up the wires. Is there a way to hook a wireless router to the att modem. If not please explain a way for me to use both my desktop and my laptop and the things I need to buy for wireless internet to work. Thanx

yes, it's simple. I would first make sure that your modem does not have wireless already built in. Check with AT&T on that one.

otherwise, buy a wireless router, run the cable from the modem to the router, and it will broadcast the wireless signal. there will also be a port on the wireless router to run a cable from it to your desktop pc.

I have an ATT wireless router/modem that I bought from them when setting up my service about 8 months ago. It is the basic, default modem that they sell you with the service (and sometimes give a free rebate for). So I would say if you got the modem you have within that time frame, it should already have built in wireless. I use my laptop on wireless, and my family's 2 desktops are hooked up through the ethernet wires.

Yep..Just get a wireless router and it's enough to accomplish your objective. For the routers, I like Linksys, Dlink and Netgear, you can check more to get the suitable. But for beginner, I will suggest WRT54G, cheap and the performance is not bad.

Also ensure that there is Ethernet port on your modem, don't get the modem that comes with USB port only. I think you can change it with your ISP. You can only connect the modem to the router by using the modem with Ethernet port.

Purchase a wireless router and connect that to your modem with an ethernet cable.

The setup isn't very tough, and the isntructions will eb either on a CD or a printed manual.

Please be sure to read about security, so others wont be able to log into your network from around your neighborhood

most of the answers are right on.The only thing i would add is you need to be sure theres a button on the front of the laptop where you can turn it off and on wireless pick up on laptop.Make sure its on if not it wont find the router.
(most laptops have this option to turn off and on wireless internet)
