No it is not normal. If your "check engine soon" or "service engine soon" light is on or comes on and flashes, then you have an issue with the sensors that tell the vehicle how much gas and air to mix in the engine. Usually an O2, or oxygen sensor does this in conjunction with other sensing devices on cars with computers, or "brain boxes" Have a TRUSTED mechanic look at your vehicle and run a diagnostic. This should determine where the issues lies.

Catalytic converters job is to burn off unburned fuel but not large amounts at once. Its possible that the cause of your original failure will desroy your new 1. If it has a post o2 sensor(sensor after cat) that is most likely the fault. You may need to change the sensor. I would reccomened finding out what the code is before driving it very long.

The one thing to make sure of is that your engine is not running real rich and dumping excess fuel into the new converter. That will damage it as the converter tries to burn up the excess fuel and gets too hot. So you should fix any check engine light error codes, especially ones relating to engine misfires that may cause a flashing check engine light (means the computer is trying to protect the cat conv from damage). New exhaust components usually have a short period where the oils etc are burned off as they get hot for the first time.

Gotta check the o2 sensor. It's possibly bad or a bad connection. If it was going to go away, the lite wouldn't have come on.
