We just bought an HP laptop for our business... My hubby set it up and password protected it - and we had to restart it and now it says we cannot log on because our password is incorrect. We are using the SAME password that we set it up with - and it even had a "verify password" when we set it up.... is there any way to retrieve a lost password or reset the log on password? Thanks!!!

HA HA - OK...we just bought this thing TODAY!!! And, it didn't come with any disks. It has a pamphlet with it that says to make your own recovery disks....or you can restore from your own hard drive. We are just going to call HP! thanks so much!

Is it possible you had the Caps Lock on when you typed in the password during setup? Try typing in the password with Caps Lock on.

You don't have to buy a new hardrive. If you have the original disks that were purchased with the laptop, you can usually install the operating system again; also called OEM disks.

There should be a password recovery in the Windows cd(if you're using Windows). Like for XP just put the Cd and you might have to do a system restore though.

When you restart, there should be a part then it says system recovery options, go into it and do a full system restore, this will delete everything on the computer, and its like new.

if you are using XP then try this, it may sound silly but works. login as administrator (check the spelling) and ENTER leave the password column blank. Once you are able to login then go to Control Panel => User Accounts => and remove the password first on the account with which you are not able to login and then create a new password for the same account.

i want to say no, honestly.... that happened to me and unless u can get someone to bypass it somehow, u might have to get a whole new hardrive without a password. happened to me, it is a major hassle. the point of that password is to let NO ONE in under any circumstances

it was probably that the numlock was "on". in laptops, when the numlock is on, the characters (blue superscripts) in your keyboards are activated instead of your regular keyboard keys. so in standard laptop keyboards, when you type character "u" and the numlock is activated, the number "4" is entered...
