Two schools of thought, neither my own. The sports gurus on the Big Show on WEEI say that the trade of Lester, Coco and 2 Pawtucket prospects for Santana is a done deal.
Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated was on the Dan Patrick show tonight and said that the trade to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera, Phil Hughes and two prospects is a done deal. Both schools of thought start from the assumption that the Twins have to get value for Santana before the year starts as they cannot afford to keep him. Verducci believes that the Red Sox are only in the Santana bidding war to drive the price up. Whoever gets him has to sign him to a $20 million per year 4 to 7 year deal or trading all those good players makes no sense.

Basically, Minnesota's waiting for a better offer to come to them. The current deal on the table with Boston is: Lester, Crisp, Masterson and Lowrie.
Minnesota realizes that the longer into the season they keep Santana, the less they'll get in return. Right now they have the ultimate "sell high" opportunity and will trade him prior to Spring Training, however, they're just waiting to see if a better offer comes down the pike.
Look for the deal to heat up again after the new year, alot of teams weren't going to do anything until the Mitchell report and now most are on a Holiday break.

hey i need help, lets not get too crazy about ellsbury. he will be a nice player, but the ROY favorite will be Evan Longoria of the Rays.
and Frizzer, thats a nice thought, but santana has a full no trade clause and would probably not agree to a midseason trade. he wouldn't want to risk losing his value going to a new team without a huge contract.
to answer the question, i think that if everything stays the same and the offers don't change, Boston has the edge. the package of crisp, lester, lowrie and masterson fills more holes for the twins than the yankees package of hughes, cabrera and a lower prospect. crisp fills their CF hole, lester takes santanas spot in the rotation, lowrie takes bartletts spot a SS(he went to tampa bay in the garza/young deal) and masterson could become a jeff nelson type of reliever.

i am a sox fan and am i the only one that doesn't want the trade to happen? santana is cy young and all star caliber, but i don't think it is worth what they would have to give up. ellsbury is probably the offseason favorite for rookie of the year next year. jon lester is a very promising young player too, who although not as good as santana, could easily be a great number 2 or 3 in the distant future. one of the prospects u mention is also a shortstop, and it would be great to get a good shortstop to come up through the system after the constant replacement of them in the last 5 years. the only thing i like about this trade is that coco would be gone, who hasn't been anything like he was expected to be replacing damon 2 years ago, which would give significantly more playing time to ellsbury, who will be one of the premiere centerfielders in a few years. at least the red sox have insisted on not putting clay bucholz in the deal.

First off, Ellsbury isnt even worth Santana, he hasnt proven ANYTHING in the bigs yet. If the Twins are smart they will keep Santana until they get an offer thats abt twice as good as the one the Sox are offering right now. Lester, Crisp, and prospects? What a joke.

all i no is that the sox are not gonna trade Lester and Ellsbury together. The trade i would like to see is Lester, Coco, and Jed Lowry for Santana. Then we can keep Ellsbury and Bucholz.

The chances are now greater that he will stay with the Twins than to be traded to any team. Remember, Santana does not become a free agent until after the 2008 season so the Twins have time. They will have the benefit of his services during the first part of the year and can always trade him to a pennant contender later in the season.

I think it was finalized as Coco Crisp, etc. for Santana, b/c Boston didn't want to give up Jacoby.

I don't think Minnesota will trade to Boston Santana without Ellsbury in the mix. I think Minnesota is looking for the best deal out there for him and in no hurry.

They stopped reporting on this, so I have to imagin that the deal fell through. If they still are in talks however, the last thing I heard was that the Indians rejected the trade offer that Jacoby was in.
If they do the trade, I'd much rather them get rid of Cocoa. Jacoby is awesome.
