Ok so heres the story. I am totally retarded. I decided to make a deposit using the envelope you get at an ATM at my local bank. I've only seen my fiance do it once so when I push it through the hole I push it through the wrong one! It falls in a spot where I think I can reach it so I keep trying to get it. I can touch it but not quite grab it so I pry the plastic apart alittle bit and grab it and deposit it. However, I can't get the machine back into place so I hit it a few times but it won't budge. I drive away and call my fiance because I'm really nervous thinking maybe the bank will think I was trying to steal money. However, nothing happens for a few days until two cops show up at my house saying I set off a silent alarm and the bank wants to charge me with destruction of property. I tell the cop the whole story and now I have to call the bank tomorrow to fix the situation as per the cop. What should I do? Help!? I'm so stupid!

yes by all means go to the bank -- but go with hat in hand and pay for the damage you did -- you broke it why should anyone else pay for your dumb mistakes!!!

You PAY for what YOU BROKE. Assuming ANY of your story is true, YOU damaged the banks property. What you SHOULD have done is NOT try to retrieve the envelope. Instead, you should have told the bank what happened and let them take care of it.

For what its worth, I work for an bank and have NEVER seen a 'wrong hole' that would put the envelope anywhere you could SEE, let alone believe you could reach.

To those who think they will forgive the damages: You have no CLUE how much it costs to repair an ATM.

doglover: Your answer is BOGUS. Drive up ATMs are in an ENCLOSURE that can take a lot of abuse, but the actual ATM could be DESTROYED by the average close fisted punch.

I would go to the bank and try to explain. It sounds like the ATM wasn't labeled properly if you tried to put the envelope into the wrong slot. The ATM probably has insurance to cover repairs. I worked at banks for over 20 years and have seen damage to ATMs. Even cars ramming into them accidentally, and they are sturdy, I doubt you even did any damage.
I have seen people put their cards into the slot wrong so it fell between the ATM and the wall and even a couple that put their deposit in the wrong place.

i agree with joe go to the bank and tell your situation but most likely they caught you on camera damaging the banks property. You would probably have to pay for tha ATM but maybe they are understandable and waive the damage or pay half of the damages...

I dont mean to laugh but that is a pretty amusing story, especially since you are callng yourself retarded. I thought only stuff like that happened to me!

Good luck, I'm sure the bank will drop "the charges" once you explain the story.

Go to the bank and explain the situation to the branch manager. I'm betting the entire situation will be forgotten.
