The freezer was recently loaded with additional items since my sister and her husband moved in with me. Prior to this, the freezer was practically empty. Now, left exterior side of the unit is extremely warm if not hot to the touch. Does this mean the compressor is about to go, or is it just adjusting to the additional items which are now stored inside?

Many freezers and fridges use a Yoder condenser loop. They use the exterior sheet metal of the unit as a heat sink to reject the heat extracted from the interior.

The freezer is removing the heat from all the additional items you placed in freezer. The warm sides is the heat that has been removed from the food. Once the majority of the heat from interior has been removed it will cool down again.

A 'fridge` is a heat pump.
If the condition is temporary, it's probably just the heat
rejected in cooling down the stuff you added.

thats just your condensor coil, it is like that big thing you have outside for your A/C, it removes heat from your fridge
