If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
http://www.delete-computer-history.com/what-is-the-best-registry-cleaner.html
2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

It really may depend on how much space you have free on your computer. It may have had a small amount of storage even though it's new. Most people spend the extra and upgrade for memory. So, go to start, settings, system, click on the performance tab. If you have less than 70% left you might need to get rid of some junk on your computer that you don't use. You can get rid of things like paint, and things that you don't use to save space. Also pictures take up a lot of space and slow your computer down. Also do you have anything like Spy bot which you can download for free and clean your computer every time you use it or AVG another free cleanup that takes the spy ware and cookies and lots of things that are put on your computer every time you use it. I get so much junk off every time I use it it's alarming. They are free and you may have to adjust the way the check your e-mail to get some graphics...yahoo has it's own cleaner. So try that and see if it helps. Good luck. Miss Mary

Well it depends really, it can be ram, processor, or even harddrive. Alot of different things can affect the performance. If you have a 7200 rpm harddrive, 512+ Ram on windows XP (more is always nice), and a name brand processor like Pentium or Athlon, then it should be ok. The lower end chips like Celeron, Duron, and theres one more... Semperon I believe aren't going to perform as good as there big brothers. Sorry I don't have anymore information for you, if you had any type of specs you could post I could possibly help track down whats going on. On top of that if you have alot of programs that start up when you first get into windows that can effect performance and like other people are saying spyware and etc an to. From my expierience there are certain programs that use alot of resources, like Zonealarm and Virus scans. I've never ran avg for myself yet so I can't tell you how it effects performance. But thats just some of my two bits, I've been a computer geek for a while and used to work for some local shops here. Hope this was usefull.

Depending on just what your computer has for a processor and somewhat on the amount of RAM, there can be many factors.
AVG, or any antivirus program, will slow your PC down drastically when it runs a scan. So you either have to abort the scan or simply let it run.
For the most part you are doing the correct things with defrag, AVG, CCleaner, etc.
What is launching in the start-up process can be a major problem also.
Here's a program that will help you shut down all those programs that want to run in the background. It's much better overall than the msconfig utility.
A major cause of a slow PC is programs that are running in the background. Software manufacturers write ".exe" files that help launch a program faster when you click on the icon. These .exe files are running all the time unless you shut them down, and they eat up your RAM and can leave you with precious little RAM to run your PC. The best thing to do is to shut down all the unnecessary programs that are running unless you specifically NEED them to be running "in the background". If you can wait another 2 or 3 seconds for a program like Word, or Adobe, or whatever to open then don't allow some of these ".exe" files to run. Each one you shut down, saves you RAM to help run your PC more efficiently. The following program, Autoruns, will allow you to control what runs when you boot up your PC.
Here's a really good Microsoft tool. It’s called "Autoruns" and it was written by SysInternals who were recently bought up by Microsoft. Before you download the program create a folder under program files called Autoruns. Leave Windows Explore open. Launch Internet Explorer and go to the following Microsoft web page. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/autoruns.mspx
Go to the bottom of the page and download the Autoruns program. After it downloads unzip the file (You'll need WinZip or WinRAR to do so). You will see 4 files. Drag and drop those 4 files to the Autoruns folder you created under Program Files.
Once you have the 4 files in the C:\Program Files\Autoruns folder you can double click on the file titled “autoruns.exe” (not the autorunsc.exe) to launch the program.
This will bring up a window with several tabs at the top. Click on the “Logon” tab. It will list the programs that are running on your PC and eating up resources. Look them over carefully and turn off any that don’t absolutely have to be running. Simply click on the “check mark” in the little box beside the program name. Clicking on it will remove the check mark. Look for any program that your are not using at this moment that has a check mark in the box. Look for programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc. Once you have edited the Startup list, click on Apply and then on OK.
NOTE: Look in the publisher column and leave items that show Windows; System 32; Program Files; etc. alone. Also leave things that mention Audio, video, etc. alone. Shutting them off may cause some things not to work. Once you have exited the window, reboot your PC for the settings to take effect.
WARNING: Don’t go into the other tabs and start deleting/unchecking things. You will probably give yourself major headaches if you do that. Stay focused on the “Logon” List only. If you happen to shut off something that you didn't intend to, you can relaunch the Autoruns program and simply put the check mark back in the appropriate box, and then reboot the PC. The "program" will be reinstated to run at boot up.
Hope this helps.

what share minutes does it take to startup? 2-3 minutes is life like. 4 or greater isn't established. you probably did no longer point out a spyware test, have you ever achieved that? AVG Anti-spyware is physically powerful for this activity, verify the spyware database is as much as date first. take a seem at your startup courses, press start up / Run, then form "msconfig" and enter. you are able to then uncheck any software which you do no longer decide to start up with abode windows. in case you are able to't locate the reason at the back of the decelerate you would be able to evaluate re-setting up abode windows. it is going to imply which you will ought to re-set up the softwares which you employ frequently, however the overall performance progression is in lots of situations properly well worth the attempt. Hardware issues is likewise a possibility yet a distant one, if after re-setting up abode windows your workstation continues to be sluggish it's time to lug it to the fix keep to have the hardware inspected.

If your operating system is XP:
1. Run
2. MSCONFIG
3. Open it
4. Startup tab
5. Uncheck programs that you don't need to start up every time
if you are unsure of what the file is, extend the COMMAND section all the way and look for familiar names in the file path. click ok. you don't need to restart your computer.

There are prolly many applications starting at startup that you don't know about like updaters. Adobe is well known for this, as well as many other software companies who use the startup as their own personal time to randomly check for updates. Here is a link with directions to fix this problem http://tweaksforgeeks.com/ModSysStart.html

Did it suddenly get slow? Or has it always been slow?
If it got suddenly slow, use System Restore to go back to a date when it was running OK.
Go into Help, type System Restore, and click "Run System Restore Wizard". Choose a date to restore your PC to.
