The Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated species of South American camelid. It resembles a small llama in superficial appearance.

You know, the whole family has long necks, right? The four camellids in this group are the Llama, Guanaco, Alpaca and Vicuna. Both Guanacos and Vicunas are rarely seen outside their native countries. Llamas and alpacas are both popular animals but the alpaca is used for wool production.

I think you are referring to the Vicuna. The vicuna is the smallest of the Llama family - almost small deer or large goat size.

In the llama family, besides llamas, you have alpacas, guanacos and vicunas. These are in order of size (largest to smallest) and domesticity (from most domestic to wildest).

You can get wool from all of them, but guanaco and vicunas are less domesticated and harder to get wool from. You can only shear a vicuna every 3 years or so; because of the fineness of its wool and rarity, in Incan times, it was illegal for anyone but royalty to wear items made from its wool.

Whether you work with equine or production animals, you will be expected, day or night, to go out in the cold of winter and in the heat of summer on farm calls. And, it can be messy!

Alpacas, although they do not have short legs (they might look like it if their fiber is very long, though). There are also alpacas that look like they have dreadlocks (suris); the type with wool like sheep are called huacayas.
