Unfortunately this is happening all over the world. We do have gun crime in the UK but nowhere near the numbers in America. The problem here is knifings. There have been way too many people killed through knife crimes this year. Our hearts go out to every family affected by crime. There is a lot of gang culture in the cities and towns across Britain today and this is adding to the gun and knife crime and killings. There is a terrible problem of under-age drinking in this country too but up and down the land there are young people who are living in poverty, have no where to go due to youth clubs closing and nothing else being provided for our young people and that is the reason for them drinking alcohol and taking drugs. Even the little town that we live in has a terrrible problem with drugs. It is very frightening. We never go out at night due to the change in the atmosphere in town when it is dark.

Probably. There are so many kids growing up without being taught values and being ''raised'' by day care instead of their parents. Video games and violent movies are being watched by the young and they become desensitized by the time they are adults if not sooner. More and more people are poor and desperate.
Memphis Tn and Houston Tx are the two worst cities in the U.S. for violence and Memphis is rated worst by the FBI. These cities are also where the majority of rescued New Orleans citizens were taken.
Desperate people do desperate things. I am not condoning it but it is true.
Also it seems that people are getting dumber. I don't know why. These idiots that take Meth and know how addictive it is and that it can kill them still do it. Young girls seem to have no respect for themselves anymore. Womens lib has taken 10 steps backward.
It is becoming a scary world.

Its not only in America as i live in Australia and we have our own share of violence as does the rest of the world. I really think that the economic situations and the religious zealots have a lot to answer to in the way of the peoples pure frustration of their plight. Now i agree that a lot of people can help themselves out of a lot of situations but there are some people that can not be helped no matter what.
The case of the young man going into the school and shooting classmates and teachers - what was going through his head? Was he being bullied or ignored(this is still no excuse) or did he just want to go down in a blaze of glory for doing something that people were going to talk about for weeks and months to come? I don't pretend to understand but there is obviously a mentality that a human life is not worth anything and that is really sad.

There are a number of reasons:

1. We have instant access to the news.

2. Violence is advocated on TVs and the movies.

3. The media glamourizes violence, and they pick and choose what is "news worthy."

Violence have been around since the beginning of time. Gangs existed back then, too. 9/11 wasn't the first terrorist act. Look up the Mafia, the Russian mob, IRA, etc.

I'm afraid you're right. We seem to be becoming more and more violent as a society. Violence is worshiped in movies and video games, so it's not surprising that people are acting accordingly.

However, I believe the main reason for increased violence is that fact that many Americans feel disconnected from the rest of society. The world seems bleak and hopeless to an entire segment of underemployed, underpaid citizens. History has always shown increases in crime during times of greater poverty.

Not just in the us. All over , my friends and I are saying the world's gone nuts.

In Kitchener Ontario last weekend some young adult allegedly murdered an old man delivering christmas cards in his neighbourhood.

Then the same alleged assailant went and attacked an younger man in a nearby neighbourhood on monday , because the man said he was a christian and loved God.

Makes you wonder what the heck is going on.

If you believe the Hopis and the Mayans as we head to 2012 things are going to get more violent and nasty not just with people but with weather , topical landmarks etc.

So many people with undiagnosed mental health problems running around the streets , is it due to backlogs in the health system both in Canada and the US, so few pyschiatric facilities and psychiatrists, something within the environment, something we're feeding to young people or have done to young people in utero.

There is more violence then ever. Restrictions on what goes for tv or movies even song lyrics have gone down the road. Kids find out athletes who they have looked up to have been cheating by using body enhancing steriods or drugs. There seems to be no respect for human life. People don't spend time with their kids or teach them to be good to each other. Oh for the good old days. They may have been rough times but we knew right from wrong and had respect for people and property.

My wife and I wonder the same thing.
Although today there is almost instantaneous access to news and far more sources for us to get news. Violence always sells print and air time far more than main stream stories and there's a lot of air space to fill.
Statistical data is also much easier to obtain and categorize so even if the statistics show an increase that isn't necessarily true.

Its not you, blame it on the media. they cover every petty crime made, and people would think that violence is getting rampant. Media people these days don't know how to cover "Quality" news, all they ever think of are just "Ratings". Eventually, you would think that violence is everywhere. You can't stop violence, and there's nothing you can do about it, it will never give you peace of mind.

I would suggest stop watching nonsense news, and try watching "business news" or the "discovery channel" or "playhouse disney." Or keep yourself pre-occupied, it would only mean you are wasting too much time watching TV. Make yourself useful.

I've heard of a saying, but i forgot who said it, but it goes like this:

Great minds talk about ideas. Average minds talk about events. Poor minds talk about people.

What kind of mind do you have?

I think there was more violence years ago but it has become an issue today due to political correctness.

When I was younger, a dispute could be settled behind the barn or out on the street.
Today with (zero tolerance?) for violence, the combatants would be suspended, fired, arrested and/or sued.
