It was indeed John Paul Jones, when asked by the British to surrender as he fought on the ship the "Bonhomme Richard", but he wasn't exactly an American patriot, he was from Scotland. Nathan Hale was noted for saying "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country" just before being hung as a spy.

John Paul Jone on the ship Bonhome Richard during a battle versus the British ship Serapis. Even though the Bonhome Richard was heavily damaged the crew was able to take possesion of the Serapis.
