If you're prepared for a challenge, how about Glass Catfish? They are VERY interesting, and their transparency is quite eye catching. They are schooling fish (so keep 5+; the more the merrier), so be sure you can get a proper amount. Planted tanks are great for these guys and will encourage them to be more active. They can be very sensitive to water quality, so be sure to stay up on your weekly maintenance, and do everything possible to avoid shocking them. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Don't you think that might have been a good thing to tell us in the beginning? What about some Farlowella species, Banjo Cats, or Whiptail Cats? They all get fairly large and would be nice in a 55 gallon tank, especially with plants or some rockwork.

EDIT 2: LOL... okay, now that we've narrowed it down to about 1/4 of the world's Catfish (just kidding of course)... What about Bumblebee Catfish, Upside Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris), or Porthole Catfish (Dianema longibarbis)?

EDIT 3: Please let me know if you make any more additions. I would like to see what/which Catfish you end up choosing.

Among the lists that are put out there, I think one thing that really should be mentioned is basically, that 55 long isn't an ideal long term housing for any monster or large type catfish you are looking for. Eventually, any large or channel cats are going to hit 4 feet in lenght, and have nowhere to go in your tank, so unless you are or have something in range of a 210 or up, why bother? I mean it's your call, and the one monster cat that comes to mind, is a red tailed cat. But again, this is a 4-6 foot cat as an adult. I'd think that fits in your large catagory that isn't really mentioned.

Make you some dough balls or dough bait as we call it. Carp like it and Catfish do too. Get some flour and upload water to get it doughy. upload a can of corn. destroy up some dry canines foodstuff and upload it in. Then put in some enormous purple soda and somewhat sugar or syrup to get it sticky. Roll into balls and positioned it on a treble and fish it off the backside. in the past your next time out, bitter your self some wheat. this is worry-free, purely upload water to a pair wheat grains in a 5 gallon bucket and canopy. It stinks although this is magnificent for the chumming the water in the past you fish your doughbait. confirm you have stout line and a powerful rod. Catfish are fairly solid combatants, however the carp is an fairly solid swimmer. A carp will try your handle, they're going to aid you be attentive to in case you want a greater advantageous line, reel, and rod. Tight lines to you.

You could look at different types of synodontis catfish. One of the most common is the upide-down catfish Synodontis nigriventris. Take a look around the site below, they have a lot of good information.
