L - Long garlands of green plastic holly with shiny red plastic berries were draped across the ceiling from the center light fixture.
I - Irene wished it could be real but where, in the land of mesquite trees and prickly pear, was she to find real holly.
T - The mistletoe was real and well worth the dollar she had paid the little boy to climb that rough-barked, thorny mesquite to get.
T - Texas dust covered the mistletoe but a squirt bottle and a little water brought a shine back to the waxy leaves and white berries.
L - Little sprigs of it tied with red velvet bows were lovingly hung above each door.
E - Each ornament had been placed on the artificial Christmas tree with care.
T - Tom had allergies but votive candles in decorative containers placed about the room solved that little problem.
O - On top of the large tree sat her Victorian angel dressed in white fur trimed gold satin.
W - While a multitude of brightly colored satin balls dangled from each branch, a whole orchestra of golden miniture musical instrments sparkled among them also.
N - New white lights twinkled and danced among the branches and reflecting in the rows of beaded garlands.
O - On each branch was a small brightly wrapped box with a new shiny silver dollar tucked inside, a hundred in all.
F - Foundlings, a boy and a girl from the nearby orphanage, both twelve years old, were spending Christmas with them.
B - Both had been abandoned at an early age and because they were of mixed heritages they were concidered unadoptable.
E - Every year members of the town took one or two of the children from the orphanage into their homes for the holidays.
T - This was Tom's and Irene's first year to do so.
H - Her hopes and wishes to make this a merry Christmas for the two was evident in stacks of wraped gifts under the tree plus the added bonus mini gifts of the silver dollars.
L - Lately she had been thinking, if this worked out, maybe, just maybe........
E - Eyes bright with excitement, she stood back to survey the room, anxious with anticipation.
H - Her plans which she had carried out so carefully were coming together so far.
E - Eager for Tom to return from picking the children up, she hugged herself with happiness.
M - Merrily, she rushed to the door as she heard Tom's car pull into the drive.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!

Late in the holiday season, I have finally started shopping for Christmas. It is this way every year. That’s why my sweetheart usually gets a rather poor gift. The problem is I just don’t like shopping. Lucy loves shopping for things for others. Even though she knows my gift will likely be something I found at the last minute, she always gets just the perfect thing for me. This year, I have done better. Oh, I know I am late, but that is because I waited for the price to go down. Waiting has paid off. Now, I can really get her a gift she wants.
Over 50 percent off!!! Finally, I can afford it. Boy, will she be surprised when she opens the package. Every time we passed by here during the past six months, she has mentioned how pretty that necklace is. This is really going to make her happy. Her eyes will light up like when I gave her the wedding ring so many years ago.
Leaving the mall, I hurried home hoping to get there before she does. Eyeing the time, I quickly wrapped the box hoping it did not look too bad. Hearing her coming up the steps, I quickly placed it under the tree. "Everything looks perfect," I said to myself as I plugged in the tree.
“Merry Christmas,” I shouted as I ran to meet her at the door.

Long ago, in a land far away. In a little inn on a cold winter night. There arose the cry of an infant baby. Thrilled by the sound an old man approached the manger. Little did he know that the saviour of the world was born. Entranced by the sight he watched the parents wrap the child in swaddling clothes. Then he saw three wise men enter the manger bearing gifts. 'Oh come ye, ye faithful...' they sang as they marched in. Wise men from the east they were. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel...they further sang. Offering Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh they made obeisance to the new born King. "From afar we saw your star" said one of them. Bowing and with supplications they addressed the new King. "Even Herod is scared of losing his throne at your birth. Trembling with fear he asked us to come back and tell when we find you. He will wait forever cause we won't go back that route. Let all who have ears know that the saviour of the world is born to us this day." Explained one of the three wise men.
"Heavens be praised." Exclaimed the baby's father Joseph and excitedly hugged his wife. Mary the mother of Jesus.

A CHRISTMAS HOUSE CALL
Lost, I thought, when the cold winter air blasted the blizzard into my eyes. I felt a little better when I heard Friday yell out behind me, "Dr Devon, turn right around and walk twenty paces towards me."
Twisting myself around, I began shambling in small steps towards her voice. Twenty paces indeed - I was going to need a lot more than that in this gut wrenching gale. Little did I know that she had already factored that in to the equation!
Eyes that could have been twin emeralds opened then narrowed at me as her face swam out of the white fury. "Take my hand", she ordered, so I grasped her hand with my gloved one then she lead me away, "my grandmother is in a bad way." Over the cattle grid, I stumbled but she caught me deftly - her strength quite surprising.
“Wow”, I enthused,”those are some muscles you’ve got – aerobics?”
“No, martial arts training and yoga”, she said sheepishly,” a girl has able to protect herself these days”. Obviously embarrassed that a vicar’s daughter should have studied these things, she picked up the pace and suddenly her grandmother’s house materialised out of the ferocious flurries.
Fighting the urge to laugh, I followed her into the house which felt like a furnace after the treacherous journey I had made on foot, as my car had died a mile and a half out. Bella (her bull mastiff) bounded up to me, rested her front paws on my shoulders and slobbered all over my face. “Easy, girl”, she coaxed,”Dr Devon needs to see grandma, now, you can catch up later”.
Taking our coats off, we dashed up the stairs – Bella was well trained and stayed down. Hurrying into the room, we saw Lillian – it was clear she was in some pain but she managed a little smile for me.
”Last grandchild not married off yet”, she uttered, not wasting a breath, “so as its Christmas Eve, I have a present for you girl. Every story must have its ending – no doctor, don’t examine me - in the top drawer of the dresser: take out the small blue box, girl. Haste girl I don’t have long, that’s it, my present to you – my own wedding ring – and you young Desdemona Devon what’s your present to me going to be?”
“Eventually, you’ll say yes”, Friday smiled, “please don’t fight it – I never let you know how I felt about you…”
“Make no mistake”, I recovered, “my luck’s finally about to change – and I am going to do my best to make her happy,” I promised to Lillian as her eyes closed, for the final time.
