Ok, I'm from Wisconsin so I definitely know what the cold is like... However, how much time do you actually expect to be outside??
As far as shoes/boots go, it would be ridiculous for you to waste your $ on snow boots unless you want Uggs for fashion?? If you will just be going in and out of places casually, I suggest any type of tennis shoe, heels, or your typical dress boot is even fine....just no sandals or open toed shoes for obvious reasons.
Obviously Jeans or any normal dress pants, etc....
Turtleneck sweaters are always nice, especially the fuzzy ones.....Victoria's Secret website actually has some really cute ones....or thin long sleeve plain shirts with somewhat of a poofy vest is always cute. Basically anything with long sleeves. Sometimes I even skip a jacket and layer hooded sweatshirts, sounds wierd but I think it's cute!?
As far as jackets go, I'd recommend a poofy one of some sort for casual and a long women's pea coat for a dressier touch.
Definitely a pair of gloves, and if you'll be outside for long periods of time, a scarf and maybe even a "headband"...not a fashion one though....I mean the ones that are fuzzy and cover your ears in the cold!!
You should be set!!!!

Well, if last winter's weather is any indication, you are going to need plenty of warm clothing and outerwear, and well as some good winter boots. Pretty much record-breaking snowfalls and cold for the months of January and February of '08. Have a good (preferably down-filled) winter coat, with a hood and/or a nice warm hat/earmuffs. A wool scarf and winter gloves as well. A lot of times on the coldest days of winter when the wind is biting cold and with the wind chill it is below zero you want to cover up your face with a scarf or something as much as possible. On the brighter side, the spring and fall in Michigan are really beautiful. Gorgeous weather right now.

here in new england, north face and LL Bean are our best friends.
seriously, check them out.
and the weather is so cold that we don't care if we look fashionable, as long as we are warm.
northface has great winter jackets and gloves and hats
actually snow BOOTS are usually only worn for shoveling and little kid sledding... so unless you will be stuff like that, you don't need the hard core winter boots. you just need warm winter boots. i wouldn't reccomend uggs, those are pretty expensive and although they are warm, you won't be wearing them for very long since this is a visit, so you should buy something cheaper. just search through websites and department stores.
heck, you don't even NEED boost, you can just wear comfortable sneakers.
ll bean has lots of warm fleeces and vests, they have a womens section too with lots of sweaters and warm clothing
basically, the answer is layers
lots and lots of layers
www.llbean.com
www.thenorthface.com
check em out
i don't know what people are saying about no snow...
i live in Massachusetts and we've already had a total of over 2 feet this year, and it's still fall!
i guess it depends where you are going. if you are going anywhere in new england, you will see snow. lots and lots of snow.

Ok if you are going to the east coast and not planning on going skiing or snowboarding or anything then all you really need is some tennis shoes or warm boots (not snow boots), Jeans, A winter coat, a hat, scarf, mittens, and a warm shirt!! If you are going to the east coast and planning on going skiing or snowboarding or anything then you will need snowpants, a winter coat, snow boots, warm gloves, a scarf, a hat, warm clothes to wear under your winter clothes... You will look horrific with all that winter gear on but no one will care because you will be warm and when you get inside you can take it off and reveal your fashion forward clothes!!

Unless you're planning to spend your visit on a ski resort or somewhere in upper Vermont, there isn't any snow here yet.
Honestly, it's not like you're coming to the Yukon wilderness. Just dress warm, sweater, parker, jeans, and some weather proof boots.
You didn't mention where on the east coast your are coming to. Florida is also on the east coast.

lol, as long as you aren't planning to run around in the snow, dont' worry about boots. just wear sneakers, jeans will be okay as well.
get yourself a hat and gloves that you will like, if you don't care about them and only plan to use them for a short while. look for some at like wal-mart or target, jc penny or something, the coats all depend on what you like Carhart are very warm coats. look up ski companies or something if you want more fashionable coats,
if you do plan to play in snow, just keep looking for boots, hopefully you'll find some you like.
lol, you will be cold, you won't be used to the temperature, maybe even get a scarf. but make sure to get a warm hat, this will help a lot, because you lose a lot heat through your head.

Try REI ... at rei.com ... they are a good company who sell really good looking clothes. The company is in Seattle but since you are from the west coast, you'll be more comfortable in this stuff than you would from a place like L.L. Bean ... and remember to LAYER rather than buy really 'heavy' clothing that you can't take off easily ... it may be COLD outside, but it's going to be warmer inside, and you'll need to have several layers to 'get comfortable' but stay 'well covered' ... and you are correct ... snow boots LOOK HORRID, but you should buy some and wear them because they work BEST in both snow and heavy rain ... I have a 'very expensive' pair I wear at most three times a year ...but I'm glad I've got them, and they'll last me FOREVER ...

If you are going to a big city, snow boots probably won't be necessary. However, some warm ankle boots or longer leather knee-high boots would be appropriate.
Basically, plan to bring layers of clothes so that you can add and subtract as necessary.
Try R&R or LL Bean or Eddie Bauer.

lol fashionably clueless.
that's cute.
Google Macy's or Old Navy or even Walmart and see what is in their winter clothing departments.
Boots are boots, some are nice but do not protect, and the ugly looking ones are the one's that keep you dry and warm.
Also depending on where you are going to the east coast will determine the weather.
Heck, here in NC we had 80 degrees last week.
Where are you going?

Buy ugg boots (I got fake ones for $30 at Charlotte Russe), a coat (I got a puffy white jacket with a fur hood at Charlotte Russe for $40), a long sleeved shirt, jeans, and you are good to go. Layer clothes and wear a hat and scarf if it is snowing.
