so here is something that has been bothering me, why is it when we are working for a company and we are about to quit because we found a new job we have to give a 2 week notice so the company can find someone to replace you. but then why cant companies give an employee a 2 week notice when they are gonna fire them, that way the employee can look for a new job within those 2 weeks. i think its only fair if we give 2 week notice i think companies should give the same respect back.. what do you think?

The reality is there is no law that you have to give two weeks, it is just a being polite. Many businesses give two weeks severance packages when they fire you. One reason they don't want you to stay is that they worry you will do something bad that will cost the company.

Not that all people would do this ... but some people might take advantage of that two weeks notice to damage company equipment (Hey! What more can they do to me anyway ... I'm being laid off in two weeks!)

When you file your notice (which is becoming increasing rare), you already have another job to go to, so there is no reason to "get even", they way a laid off worker might try.

Fired is another story altogether, usually fired means that you have already broken company policies and rules enough times to use up all warnings and counseling alternatives. In that case, the company is just cutting it's losses by getting rid of an employee that can't/won't follow the rules, two weeks notice would not help the company at all in that case.

You can choose to just quit and leave without giving them a two week notice. It's just that it's more courteous that you give them 2 weeks to look for someone or train for someone into your old position. The other thing is your new work place might have already contacted your wokplace because if you give them permission to talk to your last employer they might already know about it. If you get a job offer, your new workplace understands ahead of time that you need to give a two week notice in anyways. Unless you lied and said your available right away, but that's hard to lie about.

The thing abuot being fired without warning is that they have already planned it.. they have someone to replace you or they don't need you. So both are really for having already been planned out.

If someone is really bad and they are going to get fired I sure don't want to keep paying them. You don't need to give a 2 week notice unless you might need to work for them again. Sometimes a company will ask you to stay as long as possible so they can train a person to replace you.

First of all, you don't HAVE to give 2 weeks notice. It's a professional courtesy. No, it's not fair that an employer can fire you on a whim. Unfortunately we have no control over their actions, but we do have control over ours. Always give 2 weeks notice because you are a professional and you may want to use them as a reference.

Well What did you do to get fired? Most jobs dont just fire someone for not doing something wrong. And if they do, then let you go for not doing something wrong then there probably laying you off. Being laid off could entitle you to a severence package, or beaing able to recieve unemployment. If you feel your getting fired for no reason, you should sue them. Thats what one of my friends did, and he won. Good Luck

The only reason I'd give notice is if I actually liked the employer and don't wanna screw them, or to not burn bridges. Like I might need to go back someday, so I wouldn't want to leave on bad terms.

True, but the thing is that you need a job more than they need to hire you and keep you employed. They don't care if you never work for them again. But you may need them again in the future.

Unless you have a contract, you don't have to give a two week notice.
