For the most part, fasting a day or two (or three) is not harmless. It gives your body time to digest the food you have already eaten. If you do nothing but eat all the time your body does not have the time to digest all the food you intake therefore making you feel ill and/or gain excess weight.

Preparing for bathing suit season 12 years ago I lost 45lbs in 3 months by mostly not eating. I called it the coffee and tobacco diet. It doesn't take long for the body to stop being hungry (100,000 years of hunter/gathering will do that to you) and I discovered I had tremendous energy. I believe the body devotes lots of attention and energy to digesting food.

the brain releases endorphins when the body is forced to break down it's own tissue (either fat, or muscle) for energy.
this is the high you feel.
Our bodies prefer to burn carbs for energy, and the transition from carbs to fat is at first very tiring, but then there is a serge of energy once you get past the hump
