Catalytic converters can be fairly pricey. You'll probably be looking at arount 300-500 just for the part plus the shop time of around an hour to an hour and a half around so 80-150 at a dealership. The O2 sensor will run around 80-130 and then the shop time on that as well...around half hour, so 40-50 bucks. So all said and done, around 800 bucks.

RE:
Cost to replace catalytic converter and/or oxygen sensor in 1998 Honda Civic LX?
My check engine light came on about two months ago and I haven't had the time or money to get it into a shop to fix it. I have, however, done a lot of research online and figured out the light could be caused by at least one of two things: the catalytic converter or the oxygen sensor. I will...

Federal law is not 10 years. Federal law is 8/80. Anyway, before you jump the gun and replace any parts, the 1998 Honda Civic has had a service bulletin on it since 1998. Even though you may get an 02 sensor code, or a low catalyst efficiency code, the TSB is to do nothing more than have the combustion chamber cleaned, which can run about $89.00 at most shops. There are ways to do it yourself, but you may end up fouling your spark plugs out if you aren't careful. Get the codes yanked first, and I will get you a copy of the TSB, and tell you how to fix it.

You are doing the right thing by having your trouble codes read out by the Auto Zone. Your problem is probably neither. If your expensive Cat conv was going out, you couldn't stand the smell. The O2 sensor is just an electronic nose that sniffs out the amout of oxygen in your exhaust system and tries to adjust the fuel system "accord"ingly. (little joke there) There are other engine sensors that affect the way fuel is burning as well. Don't freak out til you get the trouble code report. You'll probably be surprised.

I know an O2 sensor will cost between $50-100 each. There are usually two of them before and after the cat. The cat can cost up to $400, but I really doubt that on your car it should cost that much. Replace the sensors, they are not hard to do, but in your car, room will be at a premium. Then consider replacing the cat.

The price ranges you mentioned are pretty accurate but the best advice I can give you is to shop around. Do yourself a favor and call several shops and get estimates. PS- Don't go to discount shops like Midas - they do crappy work!!!!
