I think Tupac definitely had an influence on it. After all, referring to yourself as a "thug" was popularized by Pac, before that, the sole term for how tough you were was "gangsta". Look at hip hop's current landscape, and how everyone and their momma's best friend now considers themselves a "thug". I'm not from NY,so I don't know what cats in Southside were listening to, but I'm sure Pac had cats ear all over the States. He was cool with Biggie before the shooting, which happened in November of that year, remember? I wouldn't say "no one cared" about Pac.

Pac always had harder edged material, he just went OVERBOARD with it in 96' once he was released from prison and joined Death Row. Remember, "Outlaw" , "F**k the World", "If I die tonite", "Thug Life" ,"So much pain", etc. ALL came out prior to 96'. He beat up the Hughes brothers in 95',shot two racist off-duty cops in either 94' or 95',and did a host of other things that exhibited where he was coming from.

tupac was gangsta music. either way gangsta music already existed as hardcore rap.
