maybe it is banned in the very early grades - but you need to develop regular independent study habits to succeed in high school and beyond.

Dream on Sunshine! I pity any student who doesn't have homework. Some schools have not exactly banned it but find it too much for grade 1 and some grade 2. I personally don't agree but I don't have children in those grades anymore. Life is tough enough but dicipline really has to be taught very early. These children already know the do's and don'ts at home and their education at school prepares them not only for the next grade but for life.

Now if the only thing that was taught was the 3 R's e.g. Reading - Writing and Arithmetic. Perhaps the teacher's might have time to do that. But times change, and very young children have a lot more than that on their plates now.

You will find when you get to University, you won't be given prescribed homework. You will listen to your lecturer or master and make notes - Yes, they will tell you where to locate the information you need for assignments for your next class.
The only one who will take your examination is you and if you have never done homework or research - well you must have or you wouldn't be in University, likely would have dropped out somewhere along the way and think that 'society' let you down. No homework for the young seems to be great but it doesn't help you one iota. This is all about you & your future not anybody else's.

You get shots for all kinds of illnesses now. Just consider homework a shot towards the rest of a successful life. It will protect and empower you eventually.

I think it's necessary because it reinforces what you've already learned or at least heard in the classroom. And then, of course, there's the reading that needs to be done for your courses. You have to do it on your own. Learning is a continual process and needs a lot of self-reinforcement. Homework also teaches you to try to figure things out for yourself. This is a great help in life. And one more thing that's good about homework is that it teaches you how to organize your time so you can do your assignments and still have a life.

Montessori schools don't believe in homework. They believe that if you can't learn it in school, you're not gonna learn it at home.

Homework is unnecessary. Life is a series of tests. You're always on the spot. Those who will be best suited for the workforce, will be those who consistently test well. Plus, with budget constraints, schools can't afford to be buying books that kids will take home and possibly ruin (used to happen all the time when I was a kid). And further, experts believe that carrying all those books in a backpack at such an age, when your body is still growing is bad for you.

But, if your school assigns homework, I would advise doing it. I've found, nobody cares how smart you are, if you don't have the statistics (GPA) to back it up. Plus, those busybodies who do their homework, are usually awarded free money to attend college.

Oh yes!
When my children don't have homework I give them enrichment work to do. How can they compete as adults if they don't have a solid educational foundation? By the way - they can't complain too much - they see me doing heaps and heaps of homework from graduate school. : )

Yeah because it prepares you for collage. I'm in grade 8 and my sister is in collage for nursing and from what I seen the homework at school really helps to prepare you for the real world.
