Unless someone has a delusional disorder (such as what would be seen in scizophrenia or mania) they are aware of their lying and mistruths. Both are aware yes.

A compulsive liar is someone who decides to lie on a whim for the sake of story or ease. The lies are not planned out, as somoene would do if they were trying to cover something up purposefully. The compulsive liar shouldn't be that hard to catch since their story will change consistently, even tell different lies to get a better story.

A chronic liar is someone who had an obsession, so to speak, about lying. They have gotten into the habit where they feel out of place not lying and therefore continue with their habitual lies. As with any chronic habit it will be hard to break.
