Have you ever worked on a cruise ship?

I have been reading about how horrible it is- some people dont see daylight for weeks, they are only fed rice, you work 18 hour days 7days a week, you are punished by being locked up if you complain etc.

Is it really that bad?

Is it exploitation of people from underdeveloped countries?
Or is it a chance to make money to have a better life later?

Yes, as a musician with a band. We were treated like the lowest of employees. It wasn't much fun
