USA got involved in the civil war between South VietNam (our capitalist friends) and North VietNam (the evil communists). North was attacking south. This civil war had been going on for a long time but when the French stopped helping, USA began. About 1973 USA also quit.

As a result of war, many soldiers married local girls and brought them to USA. As result of USA ending its involvement in the war, the North won and many in South fled to USA. (google "boat people")

See google images for Siagon, you will see people hanging onto helecopters atop the USA embassy. The communists killed everyone who helped USA.

Well, there was a little incident called the Vietnam War, which made people feel like leaving home and going to America. Though we've got a lot of Vietnamese here in Melbourne, Australia too.
