First answerer is right. I live in Florida and can go to the Everglades and catch them all day long, they are fully established here (along with 30+ other non-native species).

In North Carolina, I don't know. But a few years ago I fished the Everglades in Florida and had a lot of fun catching fair sized Oscars. Didn't keep them (I was staying in a hotel, on a business trip).

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Closest would be the canals in Miami and points South. These canals also offer Snakeheads,Walking Catfish, and a couple of species of Peacock Bass (Cichla sp.). Careless importers and hobbyists have allowed contamination by these exotic species and many more (Boa Constrictors and other Pythons in the Everglades, etc).
