They don't measure it, its defined as the distance light would travel in a vacuum in one year. Its calculated at 5,878,625,373,183.61 statute miles

The distance that light travels in a year. With the speed of light being 186000 miles per second times the number of seconds in a year, it is alot of miles. Comprehending the distances in space is rather difficult. Even the distances in our own solar system are rather staggering. Once you get to interstellar space, light years are fairly small. When you get to intergalactic space, light years are tiny.
